A demo to inspire you to try VR games for exercise.
Hi all, I had a busy week as usual. All I have to report this week to encourage you is a demo of Beat Saber – a VR game I play for exercise with my Quest 3 virtual reality headset. I published it on YouTube just a moment ago, and I’ll share some thoughts about working out with Beat Saber.
On this occasion, I played in easy mode. I wanted to be sure to keep up so that your view would be enjoyable. It turns out, I couldn’t keep up, once I bumped into a chair.
That’s too bad. I kept playing afterwards and recorded several more clips. I’ll share those on YouTube after they get a quick edit. I love editing these little videos. They’re fun to make and fun to watch.
Was Beat Saber invigorating?
Over the course of about half an hour, I felt like I got some exercise. I could’ve played longer and at a harder level, but didn’t want to. I still had homework to do, and family to chat with.
You know, all those excuses that we all seem to have for reducing or eliminating exercise from our lives.
Let’s all try to do better, eh? I’ll try harder to get more exercise minutes per week, if you do!
Exercise buddies
If you’re having difficulty keeping on track with your exercise routines and goals, try finding a friend or someone online to exercise with. Games can help you with that. Exercise-oriented video games can be social!
Try my method: try to beat the high scores in games like Beat Saber. Unlikely! But it’s still fun to try to get into the top 10.
Some games randomly pair up two (or more) players, like Racket Fury and Rec Room. Table tennis type of games are a shoe-in for feeling like exercise, and they’re fun too. In Racket Fury, you can talk to each other. I didn’t know that at first – wow, that was embarrassing.
Getting into a group or paired sport in VR games is especially valued in winter. There’s no tennis when it’s raining. Indoor tennis, pickleball, squash, and other racquet sports are expensive. Plus you have to drive there. Not so with VR games.
Experiment
I encourage you to aim for variety sometimes. You never know when you’ll gain an exercise or sport partner while exploring. Sometimes you expand and experience new things, and other times, you narrow your focus to improve skills without overwhelm.
Keep at it!

I added a second video in easy mode about Beat Saber – it’s at YouTube https://youtube.com/shorts/hCLiMolmiTs – you’ll see that with practice, my coordination improved. I was ecstatic when I got through the whole song without totally embarrassing myself!
