Walking at your destination counts
I didn’t plan to expand my summer fitness activities at a car show. But last weekend’s Fords and Friends car show was packed with classics and custom builds, and I wound up walking a ton without even thinking about it. That’s one way get closer to my goal of 150 minutes a week minimum of physical exercise.
Here’s a few snapshots from that event, and my YouTube clips:
A personal connection to car shows

This year is extra cool. I’m the current president of the Early Ford V8 Club 109 here in Victoria. I kind of fell into the role and now enjoy the fun parts of being a responsible volunteer. I have a great excuse to get walking and saying hi at these kinds of events all summer long.
I’m using these summer events as another way to move around and reach my fitness goals. My personal focus this season: flexibility and endurance.
Building Toward 150 Minutes a Week
You’ve probably heard that 150 minutes of quality exercise per week is the sweet spot for maintaining health and strength. It’s a target that’s easy to reach if you’re passionate and committed. I simply build physical activity into life wherever I can. I’m not training for a race. I’m rebuilding after injuries, and reconnecting with exercise in a way that actually feels good.
Here’s what that looks like right now:
- Yoga: I just renewed my neglected Daily Yoga app; it has some programs that are very close to my injury rehab exercises
- Walking: Big score thanks to Fords and Friends event — and Deuce Days will add more steps this weekend
- Footbag, skipping, biking: I rotate though these depending on energy and weather
- Jogging: I’m experimenting with short duration runs to see what my legs can handle
Now back to the cars…
Deuce Days Is This Sunday!
If you’re anywhere near Victoria, BC, don’t miss Deuce Days this Sunday, July 20. It’s one of North America’s largest gatherings of pre-1952 classic cars — especially 1932 Fords (“Deuces”) — and the downtown core transforms into a massive parking lot of 1300 classic cars.
I’ve been to several Deuce Days events before. Here’s my personal snapshots from the last one. Can you guess which one is related to my family?

Even if you’re not a car lover, it’s a great day out: sunny sidewalks, friendly crowds, incredible craftsmanship, and a lot of walking.
