I’ve worn Merrell hiking shoes and boots on and off for at least two decades. I always liked the fit and feel. You might too. Here’s why I like them:
- Lots of room for toes
- Heel stays in place
- No fancy technology – just tie them up
- Looks nice given very little colour (this model was only available in black)
- Breathable! (compared to Arcteryx in my experience) and damn-near waterproof

My experience with Moab hiking shoes over the past 3 months
Several months ago I got my shoes at SportChek and didn’t use them much until rainy and cloudy weather came to southern Vancouver Island. They’re getting a lot of action during winter as the area becomes very cold or very rainy all of a sudden.
During rain now and then, I haven’t complained of wet feet or socks at all. Even when I emerged from my truck straight into a puddle a few times.

The grip is incredible to look at and to rely upon when walking on wet pavement and dirt trails. I use mine as day shoes, which means some dirt paths in my neighbourhood and even shopping areas in rural Victoria.
Quick conclusion
If you’re shopping for affordable winter shoes (I paid $85 CAD during a sale) that can function as hiking shoes as well, these are worth a look. I have a truck so hiking shoes are my go-to for day-to-day activities away from home.
I feel lucky that my feet tend to fit nicely in Merrell shoes and boots, and I definitely feel like I spent my money well.
