Snow skate beginner over 40

Okay, so I’m a tad over 40. Let’s agree I’m not a teenager. Yet I like skateboards, snow sports, roller skates, and more.

This weekend was snowy for a change. My city doesn’t always get snow. For years I’ve wanted to try snow skate antics so I bought one last weekend. No surprise, it snowed just a few days ago on Saturday.

Cautious newcomer to snow skating

I’ve been gliding out in the snow every chance I get. I’ve been trying to find my balance, and deal with sticky wet snow typical of Vancouver Island.

It snows rarely here nowadays. I swear, my childhood had a lot more snowy winters than my adulthood.

Monday was delightful – crisp cooler snow (I guess) under new fluffy snow. There was enough snow Monday that I was able to glide down the one and only mild slope near my home. Prior to that, the sloped part of the road was far too sheltered by trees, so I could only plot along slowly on level exposed ground.

A snow skate suitable for beginners

This snow skate is awesome and I believe it’s well-suited to beginners young and old. Mine is by Alibi and purchased from Zumiez at Mayfair Mall. It’s got some great qualities:

  • Cheap enough (<$100 on sale)
  • Durable, and easy to wipe clean at end of the day
  • It fits me – 5’6″ woman over 140 pounds LOL
  • Here’s the best part: it’s about the size of a skateboard, maybe slightly bigger, so it tucks away neatly with your other sports gear

That last point goes a long way for me – a snow skate like this doesn’t take up nearly as much room as a snowboard. A snowboard is just too much for local snow. We get only get a few inches of snow at best, and not every year.

Video footage of my first steps in the snow skating world

Check out my adventures below! This beginner is hooked on snow sports again. I’ll post again later this week when I have more video content ready to share.
