Bayonetta Origins is a fun and active visual story – my first impressions

Quick glance

  • 9/10
  • Played on Nintendo Switch (‘original’ model not OLED) – Nintendo fan site (lots of pics)
  • Psychedelic graphics at times – love it
  • Challenges aren’t too hard; the story advances easily on easiest mode
  • Battles are slightly challenging in easiest mode; not a strictly casual game
  • Short gameplay snippet with someone’s advice (not me): https://youtube.com/shorts/wuU0gCJ-S6I?feature=shared

Visuals and audio

  • Lush forest, fantasy creatures and plants
  • Some psychedelic elements – rainbow and dreamy colours at timees (well done!)
  • Text of the story appears on screen and is narrated with a British accent
  • The main character Cereza is voiced also with British accent

Game mechanics, puzzles, and difficulty

  • Cheshire is a companion that can be carried or let loose to help in exploration and battles, with one-button toggle to pick Cheshire up or set down
  • Move around using joystick
  • Puzzles and fighting scenes often involve timing – a circle appears around the opponent with a few symbols that correspond to controller buttons
  • I’ve got mine on the easiest mode – pressing buttons in time with the symbols appearing on screen is doable (I’m 50 and prefer easy gameplay)
  • If you have a break from the game, you can review a journal and capabilities reference pages to refresh your memory of what you can do
  • I haven’t learned the significance of plants and powers you collect along the way; I’m new to the Bayonetta games
  • Advice: play frequently enough so that you’ll remember the controls and story

Environments

  • Colourful outdoor forest mainly; calm exploration (no battles)
  • Built structures are where some conflicts and puzzles occur

Would I want to own Bayonetta Origins?

  • Yes, absolutely!
  • After borrowing it from the library for 2 weeks, I purchased it without a doubt as soon as I found it (on sale!) at Best Buy
  • If pressing buttons is difficult for you: you’ll need to press buttons at the right time based on symbols showing on screen, and when striking opponents in battles – try to borrow this game from a friend, library, or watch someone playing it online where you can see the actions they do in easy mode
  • Ask me for help (add a comment below) and I’ll record a demo myself if it would help you!

  • I added the header image to show the graphics style of the character
  • In-screen action shots were difficult to capture and didn’t show the graphic style so well
  • Thus the header image original source is the Nintendo Bayonetta fan website (linked above as well)
